Life and literature in the frozen zone

NAME
Long-time Alaskan Carla Helfferich was still writing the "Science Forum" column for Alaska newspapers when her irrepressible series heroine Leona Skavitch took up residence in her word processor and wouldn't leave. A fiction title wouldn't sit well with her science readers, she thought, so author Winterhouse was born. They live with a couple of cats in a cabin on a hillside above the gold-mining village of Ester, Alaska, with a good view of Mt. McKinley in the distance. (Helfferich's husband, oceanographer Peter McRoy, has his own house along the hillside with an even better view of the big mountain.)
