Marks was born in Georgetown, Ohio, the childhood home of Ulysses Grant. So it made sense to set his first mystery novel in that town. The novel features Grant and his wife, Julia, on the first Ohio stop of their victory tour just following the Civil War. The tour gets off to a rocky start when the couple discover the body of an unidentified man in their hotel suite when they arrive in Georgetown.
